SUMMARY: North Alabama has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning, with central Alabama remaining under a Winter Weather Advisory. Total snow accumulations will range from 2-4″, with the highest amounts close to the Tennessee state line. Lesser amounts from 1-2″ are possible from Cullman County points south.
DISCUSSION: Winds will begin to increase overnight ahead of the cold front, with moisture quickly following. Precipitation will begin as all rain then change over to snow/sleet then eventually change over to all snow. The snow and sleet may be heavy at times. Temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing on Saturday. Expect surface temps to bottom out and fall below freezing overnight, with bridges and overpasses first. Travel may become difficult due to slick spots.
Additionally, sustained winds of 20 MPH will be possible with the passage of the cold front, with gusts over 40 MPH, especially in higher terrain.
RECOMMENDED ACTIONS: Prepare for power outages due to high winds, plan on slippery road conditions and sudden drops in visibility. Slow down and use caution if you must drive Saturday morning.
