The WSR-88D in Birmingham, AL is currently down for upgrades as part of the SLEP (Service Life Extension Program). The site has been down since June 12th, and is expected to be up and running by the 20th.


Next in line will be the KHTX radar in Hytop, AL which services North Alabama. The radar site is going to go down around the time KBMX goes back up.

...KHTX Doppler Radar Will Be Out Of Service For Maintenance Next
Week...

Beginning on Saturday, June 20, the KHTX WSR-88D located in 
Hytop, Alabama will be taken out of service for maintenance 
designed to extend the life of the radar. The outage could 
potentially last up to eight days, but may also be shorter than 
anticipated if the maintenance goes well. During this outage, 
radar data from Columbus AFB, MS (KGWX), Nashville, TN (KOHX), 
Peachtree City, GA (KFFC), and Birmingham, AL (KBMX) may be used 
for interests across northern Alabama and southern Middle 
Tennessee.
